Services for International Employees & Scholars

Extension

Extension of a J-1 scholar's SEVIS record is based on their continued appointment at KU.  Extensions are permitted if the scholar will perform the same program activity.  Please keep in mind that the both the J-1 Research Scholar and J-1 Professor categories have a maximum stay of five years, while the J-1 Short Term Scholar has a maximum stay of six months.  It is not possible to extend beyond these time periods.

The following conditions must be met before an extension can be approved.

  • The program must not extend beyond the maximum duration (6 months to 5 years depending on the J scholar category).
  • The program activity (research activity or teaching activity) will not change.
  • Additional proof of additional financial support covering the full extension time period.
  • Scholar must provide proof of health insurance coverage for extension time period.

Process

The J-1 Extension process must be initiated by the KU academic unit or research center.  Please begin the process by submitting the "J-1 Extension Program Information" e-form in the Departmental Services section of iHawk».  If you do not yet have departmental access to iHawk, please look at the instructions on how to request access
