Private Insurance

There are numerous health insurance companies that specialize in health insurance for visitors and their dependents. Some will meet the requirements for your visa category. The internet will provide you with more company options. It is your responsibility to provide a receipt of purchase for this insurance during your first week at KU. The following is a sample of websites offering J-1 insurance. You are not limited to the companies listed here. Please remember that if you are bringing dependents they must also be covered.

IMPORTANT: Many U.S. companies exclude “pre-existing conditions,” so if you are already taking regular medications under a doctor’s supervision - for diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. - be sure you buy a policy that will cover your expenses for pre-existing health conditions in the U.S. Some companies exclude pregnancy/ maternity coverage. Please carefully check with the insurance company before purchasing.
